Do I need customs agent?
This is all about your comfort level!
First off, let's define what a customs agent is. A customs agent is a person or company that is hired to make sure that all taxes are paid and that all rules are followed so that goods/products can be brought into a country.
With that said, I have ordered overseas for the past seven years without an agent. I have had a couple orders that have been held at customs and then released. This often causes at least a two week delay in my order arriving.
It is important to learn what kind of tariffs can occur based on your order from overseas. If this is not the kind of information you enjoy learning about than an agent may be helpful.
So, how much does a customs agent charge? Good question! There is not a uniform number across the industry. Pricing will be based on experience, how many forms need to be filed and if they will be able to combine services on your shipment. It can often be a flat fee based on all of these factors. It is important to search for an agent that is an expert in your product type, i.e. textiles.

Hiring an agent may be more beneficial the larger your order gets. For example, orders over $2500 will require a customs bond. Depending on how savvy you feel with the paperwork, an agent may prove to be an asset at this stage in your business.
