How Do You Regain Productivity After Taking a Break?
Took a break and now finding it hard to get back into the swing of things? You’re not alone. After a holiday, I find that getting back to being productive can feel like a super big challenge. Here are some no-fluff tips to help you regain your focus and momentum for the new year.
1. Clear Your Space
A cluttered workspace leads to a cluttered mind. Spend 10-15 minutes tidying up:
Toss or file any unnecessary papers.
Wipe down your desk.
Arrange your essentials for easy access.
A clean, organized environment sets the tone for productive work. I like to clear my space at the end of the day, that way I can start fresh when I come back to work.
2. Reflect on Your Goals
Before diving in, take a moment to reflect:
What did you accomplish before your break?
What’s your top priority now?
Jot down a few thoughts to clear your head and create focus. From here it will be easier to create a plan on how to tackle your new goals. When I first started out reflection was not a part of my plan. Now I prioritize what worked, what didn't and where things can improve.
3. Start Small
Ease into your tasks by starting with quick wins. Pick one thing you can finish in 10 minutes or less, like responding to a simple email or updating your to-do list. Small victories build momentum and they are so fun to cross off a list!
4. Rebuild Your Routine
Get back to basics with a routine that works for you. Start small:
Block time for focused work.
Take breaks to recharge.
Add one energizing habit, like a morning walk or journaling.
Consistency is key, so keep it simple and sustainable. I started doing morning pages last year and this really helped me get through the weeds so that when I finally sat down I wasn't paying attention to the little distractions in my head- I was ready to go!
5. Prioritize and Plan
Write out your top 2-3 priorities for the day or week. Not everything is urgent, and focusing on fewer tasks helps you avoid overwhelm. Use a planner or digital app to stay organized. I still love the feel of pen on paper and crossing things off. Long live the pen! You do you- choose a method that is easy and can be done daily. I can't tell you the amount of time I have wasted on finding the perfect planner, lol.
6. Stay Flexible
Things might not go exactly as planned, and that’s okay. Adapt as needed and don’t let small setbacks derail you. Progress, not perfection, is the goal. Learning to pivot will make you stronger. Sick kids? Oil change? These are all places we can be flexible and maybe tackle the smaller things while doing these big life things.
7. Celebrate Progress
Don’t wait for the big milestones to celebrate. Acknowledge small wins—whether it’s completing a task or sticking to your plan for the day. Recognizing your progress keeps you motivated. I want to challenge you to create a 2025 list for wins! Write things down as they happen or put them in a jar. This type of reflection will see that you really are working towards your dreams!
