How to Design Washi Tape That Actually Prints Right
Your art looks beautiful on screen. That doesn't mean it's print-ready.
This is the lesson I wish someone had sat me down and said before I sent my very first washi tape file to a factory. Beautiful art and print-ready art are not the same thing. And the gap between them, if you don't know it's there, is exactly where first orders get expensive.
Let’s walk through this.
The five file mistakes I see most often
These are the exact issues that show up in nine out of ten first-time washi tape files. The good news: every single one is fixable in five minutes once you know what to look for.
1. No bleed. Washi tape is a thin strip, and the printed surface needs to extend slightly past the actual cut edge — usually 1.5mm of bleed on the top and bottom. Without it, even a tiny shift on the production line will show as a white sliver on the edge of the roll. Always add bleed.
2. RGB instead of CMYK. RGB is for screens. CMYK is for print. They are not the same color space, and a hot pink on your screen can shift to a chalky red on tape if the file is RGB. Convert before you send.
3. Repeat seam errors. Washi tape is printed in a continuous repeat, meaning the design wraps around the roll over and over. That means the right edge has to match the left edge perfectly. If your repeat doesn't tile cleanly, you'll see a visible seam every few inches. This is the most common (and most heartbreaking) mistake on first orders.
4. Low DPI. Final art should be 300 DPI at the actual print size. Files exported at 72 DPI will print blurry. Files designed at 300 DPI but shrunk down to a tiny canvas will also print blurry. Design at the real size. Export at 300 DPI. No exceptions.
5. Wrong dimensions. Standard widths in custom washi tape are 15mm or 24.4mm. If you design at 27mm because that's what felt right, the factory will either resize your art (often poorly) or ask you to redo it. Confirm the exact width with your factory before you start designing.
The repeat-pattern rule that makes or breaks tape design
If I had to pick the one thing that separates pretty art from production-ready washi tape art, it's understanding repeats.
A repeat is the unit of artwork that tiles to fill the roll. The factory will print your design across the entire length of the tape, so wherever your design ends on the right has to flow into where it begins on the left — without a visible seam.
The simplest way to nail this: design with overlap from the start. Put your motifs slightly off-grid. Avoid hard horizontal or vertical lines that have to align exactly. And do a digital test before sending: duplicate your repeat unit four times in a row and zoom in on the seams. If you can see the seam line, the factory's printer will see it too.
This is the single hardest skill to teach over text and the single most important one to actually learn before you send a file. It's also the one that comes up the most in coaching calls.
Procreate vs. Adobe Illustrator: which to use for what
You don't need both. You can absolutely make beautiful, print-ready washi tape in either one.
Procreate is faster, more intuitive, and ideal if you're already drawing in it. The trade-off is that it's raster, so you have to design at the final print size and DPI from the start. Super bonus: a one time fee and then you own the program!
Adobe Illustrator is vector, which means your art scales infinitely without losing quality. It's the better choice if you want to use the same artwork across multiple products at different sizes- washi tape, then stickers, then wrapping paper.

The final print check (run this on every file, every time)
Before you send any file to a factory, run this five-minute check:
Bleed is added (1.5mm minimum on each side)
File is in CMYK
Resolution is 300 DPI at actual print size
Dimensions match what your factory specified exactly
Repeat tiles cleanly with no visible seam (test with four duplicates side by side)
File is exported as a high-quality PDF or TIFF, not a JPEG- I often submit an ai file to my factory.
This list has saved my students more reprints than any other single tool I share. Print it out. Put it next to your computer.
What I got wrong early on
When I first started designing tape, the bleed got me. I wasn’t used to doing design work that required a bleed. So, when I unpacked my order and there was a fine white line on the top of my tape- I learned the hard way.
The mistake itself isn't the lesson. The lesson is that I started checking files before I sent them, every time, no exceptions- even when I was sure it was fine. Especially when I was sure it was fine.
Templates do most of the work for you
The fastest way to skip all five of the mistakes above is to start from a template that already has bleed, color space, dimensions, and repeat structure built in. You design inside the template instead of guessing at the specs.
