When you start running the numbers and realize your pricing can’t go higher without pricing yourself out of your market, overseas manufacturing might make sense.

Here’s an example:
Let’s say your domestically produced tea towel costs $12 per unit, and you sell it wholesale for $16. Your margin is razor thin. An overseas factory might produce that same towel for $5–7, allowing you to maintain quality and keep your pricing competitive.

2. When You’re Ready to Scale

Domestic manufacturers are great for small runs and first collections, but once your demand increases, they might not be able to keep up or their lead times might stretch too long.

If you’re finding yourself constantly out of stock or waiting months between restocks, that’s your cue. Overseas factories often have larger capacity, more automation, and faster turnaround once you’ve gone through the initial setup and sampling process.

The key is to move when you’re ready- not just because it sounds appealing. You want a product that’s proven itself, consistent demand, and at least a few solid retail or wholesale outlets ready to reorder.

Overseas manufacturing opens doors to products that simply aren’t practical (or possible) domestically.

Maybe you’ve been producing paper goods in the U.S. but dream of adding textiles, ceramics, or home accessories. Many of those categories are far more cost-effective to produce overseas. Once you’ve nailed your brand aesthetic and your quality standards, expanding overseas can help bring your bigger ideas to life.

4. When You’re Confident in Your Systems

Overseas manufacturing introduces new variables—shipping, customs, tariffs, and communication across time zones. If you already have your domestic production systems running smoothly: clear SKUs, timelines, artwork files, and quality control processes- you’re in a great position to move overseas confidently.

But, if your processes still feel messy or reactive, take the time to refine them first. The smoother your workflow, the easier it’ll be to collaborate with a factory across the globe.

5. When You’re Ready for Better Margins (and a Bigger Business)

At some point, most product-based businesses outgrow domestic production. Overseas manufacturing allows you to increase your margins, build in wholesale pricing that actually works, and reinvest in your business.

This doesn’t mean you’re abandoning local production, it means you’re growing strategically. I still produce certain items domestically while manufacturing others overseas. It’s about balance, not an all-or-nothing shift.
