How to Conquer Business Overwhelm

Starting a business can feel like juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle—exciting but utterly overwhelming! Especially if you're an artist trying to transform your creative passion into a profitable business. It can feel like you need to do all the things at the same time. Over the years, I have figured out five steps to help you kick overwhelm to the curb and I can’t wait to share them with you!

1. Prioritize Like a Total Boss

Remember that time you tried to learn how to paint, sculpt, and knit all at once? Yeah, that didn't end well. The same applies to business tasks. Make a list of everything you need to do and then rank them. Which tasks are going to move the needle the most? Focus on those first. Think of it as creating the perfect roadmap—each step laid out perfectly.. What surprises me about this step is that you will often find there are a lot of things we think need to be done, but really they won’t make a difference in the long run. Toss those to the side and focus on the big movers in your business!

2. Break It Down

Ever tried to eat a giant chocolate cake in one bite? Impossible, right? (BUMMER!) The same goes for tackling big projects. Break them down into bite-sized tasks. This way, instead of staring at a massive to-do list, you’ll have manageable steps that make progress feel like a sweet victory. Plus, who doesn't love crossing things off a list?

3. Embrace the Power of No"

As artists, we love to say yes to every opportunity, every collaboration, and every shiny new idea. But saying no can be just as powerful. This is still so hard for me. I love to be a yes person, but I am slowly starting to see how being a no person opens up so much room for the BIG yesses. Learning how to guard your time like it's the last tube of your favorite paint color will change everything. Focus on what truly aligns with your business goals and let the rest go. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

4. Automate and Delegate

This could make a really awesome new rap song, am I right? Lean into using technology to automate repetitive tasks. And if you can, delegate! Whether it's hiring help for packaging or using software to manage your inventory (thank you Trunk Inventory!), freeing up your time for creativity is key. In the beginning this may look like your mom helping with gift tags… it all adds up!

5. Celebrate Small Wins

Every. Win. Counts!. Did you finally set up that online shop? High five! Sold your first piece? Happy dance time! Celebrating these milestones keeps you motivated and reminds you why you started this journey in the first place. Plus, who doesn't love an excuse to celebrate?

Starting a business takes grit and determination, but with these steps, you can transform that overwhelm into opportunities. Remember, everyone started at the same place. Comparison can kill your own joy in two seconds. If you find that you are feeling low, get off social media ( a constant thread of wins) and get into your business. You got this!
