How do you scale a business with product?
If you're here, you’re probably dreaming big—thinking about taking your custom product from a passion project to something that can stand tall in the marketplace. Scaling a business is no small feat; it’s like planning a cross-country road trip. You need a solid map, a reliable vehicle, and a lot of snacks for the journey, always snacks!
Let's dive into the ins and outs of scaling your business with product!
1. Start with a Solid Foundation: Your Custom Product
First things first, let’s talk about your product. This isn’t just any run-of-the-mill item—it’s your baby! Whether it's eco-friendly stationery or awesome art prints, your product needs to be well-defined and market-ready. Think of this stage as laying the groundwork for future growth.
Define Your Unique Value Proposition (UVP)
What makes your product special? Why should people care? Answering these questions will help you carve out your niche in the market. Remember, you’re not just selling a product; you’re offering a solution or an experience. Make sure your UVP is crystal clear to both you and your customers. I will often see others explain their own UVP way better than I do and I take notes on the the things that stand out to me and draw me in to other business's product ads.... make your own notes!
Sample and Test
Before you approve production, create prototypes and gather feedback. Trust me; nothing beats real-world testing. It’s like giving your car a test drive before embarking on that epic road trip. Make sure it has all the parts working, check the oil, kick the tires, make sure it's going to get you from point A to B!
2. Choose Your Manufacturing Path: US vs Overseas
Ah, the age-old debate—should you manufacture locally or overseas? Each option has its pros and cons, so let's break it down. (I go into more of the pros and cons on this post!)
Manufacturing in the USA
Producing domestically can mean higher costs but quicker turnaround times and better quality control. Plus, there's something really wonderful about sourcing locally.
Overseas Manufacturing
On the flip side, overseas manufacturing can significantly reduce costs but might come with longer lead times and potential quality issues. However, with diligent research and proper vetting, many businesses successfully produce high-quality products abroad.
Hybrid Approach
Why not consider a hybrid approach? Some businesses start manufacturing locally to ensure quality during initial stages and then gradually shift parts of production overseas as they scale.
3. Eco-Friendly Product Sourcing: Because Planet Earth Matters
Sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it’s a necessity. Customers are increasingly eco-conscious, so sourcing sustainable materials can give you an edge while also doing good for our planet.
Find Sustainable Suppliers
Research suppliers who prioritize sustainability. Ask them about their practices—do they use recycled materials? Are their processes energy-efficient? Feel free to ask for proof of certifications!
Transparent Supply Chain
Be transparent about where and how your products are made. Share this information with your customers; they’ll appreciate knowing that they’re supporting an eco-friendly brand. In my experience, retailers especially love knowing where your products are sourced from and if they are eco-friendly!
4. Packaging Matters: Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover...Or Should You?
They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but let’s face it—packaging matters! It’s often the first impression customers have of your product. I know I am a total sucker for good packaging. My camera roll can prove that, lol.
Design for Wow!
Your packaging should be eye-catching yet functional. Invest in design that reflects your brand's personality while protecting the product inside.
Sustainable Packaging Options
Consider using biodegradable or recyclable packaging materials. This not only reduces waste but also aligns with eco-friendly values if that’s part of your brand ethos. Have I told you about my garage? It is a recycled packaging mecca! I keep everything- no shame! Reduce your own costs and save the planet- win, win!
5. Building Strong Relationships: Collaborate for Success
No one builds a business alone! Partnering with other businesses or influencers can amplify your reach and credibility.
Strategic Partnerships
Look for complementary brands or services that align with yours. Joint ventures or co-branding opportunities can open new doors without reinventing the wheel. This can be as simples as bundling items that work well together at Christmas… Keep it simple.
Influencer Collaborations
Influencers aren’t just for the big guys! Find micro-influencers who resonate with your target audience—they often have highly engaged followers who trust their recommendations, again, this can be a really simple approach. Maybe it's reaching out to a subscription box and an influencer. Start small and gain more courage as you go. It never hurts to ask!
Final Thoughts: Embrace the Journey!
Scaling a business can be so rewarding. Remember to celebrate small wins along the way; each step forward brings you closer to achieving your dream. I like to keep a note on my phone for wins that I can review at the end of the year. It is so easy to think we aren't making progress, when really, each little step adds up!
And hey, don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed! Whether it's consulting experts in manufacturing or seeking advice from fellow entrepreneurs, building a supportive network is invaluable.
So here’s to kicking overwhelm to the curb and navigating those complexities like seasoned pros!
