What are the advantages and disadvantages of overseas and domestic manufacturing?
Sit back, grab some coffee, this is a juicy one!
Alright, for clarity, overseas is anything not being manufactured in the United States. I know you can have things made in Mexico, however, you will hit more of the advantages and disadvantages of overseas manufacturing compared to domestic manufacturing.
Overseas advantages:
lower labor costs
access to a skilled workforce
greater flexibility in customized products
lower minimums for new products
Overseas disadvantages:
quality control issues
communication challenges
foreign holidays
shipping costs
tariffs and import taxes
Now, these are pretty basic, so I thought I would add in my personal experience. I started my business with overseas manufacturing, I had no idea where to make washi tape and the only thing that came up were overseas factories. So, I jumped in! Being able to source washi tape overseas was cost effective for me starting my business. It allowed me room to play with my margins with both wholesale and direct to customer. (you can read more about washi tape costs here). As I have added new products made overseas, the workmanship has been great and I have created my own patterns for products with factories overseas. Yes, communication can get sticky. Yes, I have had issues with foreign holidays. Yes, import taxes do pop up, but that still hasn't impacted my bottom line. I have been able to scale my business by working overseas.
Domestic advantages:
quality control
communication
speed
supports the local economy
can often source small quantities to test a product
Domestic disadvantages:
higher labor costs
less access to skilled labor
higher cost per product
I realize these lists look opposite of each other and in many ways they are, however, I want to highlight that shipping times will always win for sourcing domestically. The products I do have made here happen fast and there are low minimums so that is a winning combo! I also appreciate that the products I have made here, many of the companies will reach out if there is a problem with a file or something doesn't seem right. Being able to really communicate in the same language is invaluable.
